Review: The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms

The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms has been on Shop Cheshire's review 'wish list' for quite some time so it was a delight to be invited for Sunday lunch recently...

Owned by Flat Cap Hotels - a family run group who are operators and owners of boutique hotels with restaurants & pubs specialising in delivering locally sourced British seasonal menus we were naturally attracted to the fact that they are champions of  local produce driven by the gardeners, farmers, foragers and suppliers of Cheshire.

The Vicarage is the perfect destination for a Sunday drive out - just 5 minutes walk from the village of Holmes Chapel and set back sufficiently from the main road to enjoy eating and drinking 'al fresco' when the weather permits.

Describing itself as a 'new, eccentric and innovative hotel brand' it mixes style and substance - areas around the entrance are Grade 11-listed, 17th-century) and walking in, our first impression is of a characterful, unique concept that is a breath of fresh air from the many branded bars / gastro pubs around the UK.

Specialising in delivering locally sourced British seasonal menus, beautiful interiors through personal design and 'Home away from home' accommodation - walking in to the bar for the first time is a memorable experience!

It's handsomely decorated with a heady mix of toy animal heads, polo mallets and colourful, heraldic imagery. There are flag floors and log burners, bringing to mind that The Vicarage would be equally fabulous on a cosy winter's day (we're envisaging a stylish vintage style Christmas tree by the bar...).

All their food is made fresh on their premises and their Executive Chef, Steven Tuke has just launched their new Summer Menu (which includes the Specials Board - fresh and different every Sunday!).

After settling in with a crisp glass of Prosecco we were ready to place our order. So what did we eat?

Starters...
  • Tzatziki with warm pitta bread - the perfect summer mix of Greek yoghurt, fresh mint and cucumber.
  • Pea and Mint soup with Mandeville's Bloomer.
 Mains...

The full Sunday monty!
  •  Roasted sirloin Roast potatoes, carrot mash, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, gravy, glazed carrot.

We also opted for a veggie dish which was their Open Mushroom Lasagne (wild mushroom, spinach, leeks with a white truffle sauce).

The quality and presentation of all the food was first-class - and the service was great, friendly warm and welcoming staff. Portions are very generous (we were sorry to have missed out on dessert, too full - so next time!!)

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, we took our coffee and tea outside (another gold star - our fave suppliers 'The Jaunty Goat' & 'Tea of the Manor').

The clever people at The Vicarage have thought of everything - catering for private hire, parties, weddings, Afternoon Tea, and a stay in their individually designed bedrooms (with 6 beautiful new suites in the listed part of the building).

It's the perfect package for a be-spoke Cheshire weekend - and we're looking forward to returning for a b&b stay soon!

We can't wait to sample the delights of their gourmet brekki - and non residents are also welcome, so there's no excuse not to drop by - they're open from 7am!
