Review: The Vicarage, Dine & Stay

Review: The Vicarage, Dine & Stay

We so enjoyed our first visit to The Vicarage, we decided to go back again, this time to sample the delights of their stunning rooms for a mini-break!

The Vicarage is a stylish pub with rooms located just off Knutsford Road on the edge of the market town of Holmes Chapel.

The pub raises the bar (pun intended) for the local area with a contemporary take on the classic British pub. Holmes Chapel is a more sedate location than the nearby vibrant Knutsford but it well situated for access to the M6 and a good stopping off point on the way to Chester.

The Vicarage's cosy, country chic

We stayed over for the evening and booked in for dinner. The bar and dining area are situated together but it's a good size so never feels cramped or stuffy. There is also an additional conservatory used for breakfast as well as dining.

The staff are friendly and not too formal, which is how we like it. The same goes for the decor - informal with a contemporary twist. Our room had a splendid bathroom (almost as big as the bedroom itself), comfy bed and was surprisingly quiet even though we were facing the road.

One of their Signature Rooms - where we stayed

For a Friday the bar wasn't as busy as we expected. We ordered drinks and waited for our meal.

I couldn't resist the Cornish crab with melon, avocado, mayo, chilli and lime jam. It was fresh, zesty and light - the perfect starter.

The menu is creative and diverse, with a good choice for vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. For our mains we chose the vegetarian Wellington (I know, sounds almost sacrilegious) and the herb polenta cake. The Wellington came with celeriac puree, asparagus, sweet onions, roasted spring veg and skinny fries. The polenta cake with sweetcorn puree, chard corn, peas in pod and cheddar cheese.

Both were excellent, and we finished off our meal with coffee, supplied by the very popular Jaunty Goat in Chester.

After a very comfortable night we enjoyed a hearty British breakfast. There is also a breakfast buffet with a choice of fruits and yoghurt, muesli and pastries. No skimping.

All in all the Vicarage delivers a generous experience, from its staff to its food. The passion and care that has been poured into the establishment is plain to see - and you won't feel short changed.
