Review: Caffé Grande Piccolino

Review: Caffé Grande Piccolino

After 13 years at the top of the Italian restaurant scene in Manchester – Piccolino re-opened as Caffé Grande on April 21st and Shop Cheshire were lucky enough to be invited to the launch!

Undergoing an extensive £1.3m refurbishment of the Victorian listed building, the restaurant has doubled in size to seat 200 guests – and with the creation of an alfresco terrace conveniently located overlooking Albert Square, it's the perfect dining destination if you are planning a trip to town.

Individual Restaurants continue to go from strength to strength. This latest launch will be the company's fourth opening in the last 6 months and Steven walker, founder of Individual Restaurants says: "It's always exciting to be opening new restaurants but when they are in our heartland of the North West, they become even more special."

We chose to book in for a leisurely Caffé Grande breakfast to tie in with a spot of shopping (naturally!)  and we were really impressed with the whole experience. The food was delicious as always, and the service warm and welcoming.

The restaurant setting is stunning and boats a very opulent look – with the feel of a Harrods food hall. There's a hand made Italian copper pizza oven taking centre stage in the window that overlooks Clarence Street – giving passers by a birds eye view of Piccolino's skilled pizza chefs and bakery team in action.

Next to the pizzeria is a 5-metre deli, which includes a salad bar, salumeria, shellfish counter and fresh market displays. The open kitchen boasts meat, poultry, fish and shellfish counters. Everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes (and stomach)!

Serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner until late 7 days a week – we particularly loved the addition of The Juicery which is a brand new organic juice bar (founded in New York and now in Manchester – where else?!). The team have brought in the skills of celebrity juicer Cindy Palusamy and working alongside nutritionists and leading doctors across the globe have created a be-spoke juice menu (which are also available as take outs).

Kick start your day with one of their signature juices, smoothies or booster shots and you won't go far wrong. We sampled the Clean Green (from their range of Expert Goodness juices) – a virtuous (and tasty) recipe of spinach, kale, celery, carrot, fresh ginger and lemon (£5). Ordering a smoky double espresso straight after wasn't quite what the doctor ordered but we can never resist a Piccolino coffee!

Sweet lovers will ADORE their pastry counter and ice cream bar that's situated in the main dining hall. Boasting a mouth watering array of sumptuous desserts we made a mental note after breakfast to re-visit later that afternoon.

Flagging from our strenuous shopping trip (!) a delicate Piccolino pastry was the perfect pick me up! They have their own bakery run by skilled pastry cook Antoine Quentin – all their ice cream, sorbets, cakes and desserts are made in house (and we challenge you to stop at just one!).

Caffe Grande is our new favourite Piccolino – we think it boasts the whole package and we'll be making a beeline for it next time we're in Manchester. Make sure you visit it too, you won't be disappointed!
