Wedding Dress Trends for 2016

Wedding Dress Trends for 2016

What a bride and her bridesmaids are going to wear on the big day can be arguably the most exciting – and important – part of wedding planning for any future bride...

But it can be equally overwhelming - keeping up with the latest bridal fashions and hard to pick a style that suits. This year sees some beautiful new trends coming through and some old ones re-occurring so we've rounded up our favourites to give you the low-down on 2016's hottest styles…

Stylish Separates

You might be joining in holy matrimony but it's all about separates when it comes to the dresses. A trend Olivia Palermo single-handedly seemed to start with her chic jumper and skirt wedding attire, last year the bridal fashion world dabbled with the idea and 2016 will only see it get more popular. New York Bridal Fashion Week saw Sarah Seven, Jean-Ralph Thurin and Theia all showcasing top and skirt collections for Spring 2016 and the beauty of the trend is that you can mix and match from different designers. A subtle escape from the norm and potentially a more affordable option, the separates trend seems set to become a staple in the wedding world.

Stunning stylish separates from Caroline Castigliano

A particularly beautiful design is the stunning Anya & Angelika from Caroline Castigliano at Altrincham bridal boutique, Agape. Featuring a stunning lace cropped top that allows a flash of midriff and a fabulous full silk skirt, the ensemble is a perfect option for a modern day bride.

Mix & Match Bridesmaid Dresses

Perhaps you believe variety is the spice of life or maybe you prefer to give your bridesmaids an option in what they wear. Whatever the case, you'll be pleased to hear that mismatched dresses are this year's hottest bridesmaid trend. Not only will they make for fun wedding photos, you can rest assured that your bridesmaids' smiles will be doubly as wide because they'll be wearing a dress that not only suits them but that they feel super comfortable in too. No one wants to wear a dress that isn't flattering and your best girls will look radiant and beautiful in a style you've hand-picked together.

Mismatching bridesmaid dresses can complement your colour palette

Tip: don't try and find different style dresses in the same shade – it's near impossible. Instead opt for a colour palette or theme that allows for different hues, textures and lengths. This will allow for a greater mix and will actually work better than dresses that nearly look the same colour in the photos. A good idea is to use the colours in your bouquet as a starting point.

Backless Dresses

Do we have Michelle Keegan and her beautiful wedding dress to thank for this? Regardless, backless wedding dresses are not only a hot trend for brides but for bridesmaids too. From low dips to more subtle scoops, you can show as little or as much as you want and it's a style that looks as good with a fishtail as it does with a fuller princess skirt. Hand-stitched, haute couture design house, Pronovias has some simply stunning open back dresses within their Atelier collection.

The stunning Vera from the Pronovias collection

The Vera features demure short lace sleeves and a beautifully light skirt that perfectly balance out the wide open back whilst the smooth and clean lines of the Valeria are reminiscent of Pippa Middleton's bridesmaid dress, albeit with a little more skin. Available from Knutsford Wedding Gallery.

3D Embellishments

Forget sequins, this year's embellishments are getting a whole lot bigger - bodices and skirts are being adorned with flowers, petals and leaves. Whether you opt for them subtly and sparingly placed or clustered together in a more obvious design, three-dimensional appliqués are a trend we'll be seeing a lot of.

Delicate flower embellishment from Sassi Halford

British designer, Sassi Holford, has used mini flowers in the most beautiful and creative way on several wedding dresses in her current collection and luckily for Cheshire brides-to-be, Tarporley-based Bridal Haven is a local stockist.

One-Shoulder Bridesmaid Dresses

Classy and elegant, the one-shoulder or asymmetrical dress is a flattering choice for your bridesmaids. Usually over-shadowed by the strapless dress, 2016 is the year for this style to shine, with many brides choosing it for its added support and classic shape. Admittedly less daring than other trends this year, you'll be hard-pushed to avoid it, with many designers having incorporated it into their latest collections.

Alfred Sung Bridesmaid collection at Bespoke Brides

For a pretty but not-too-fussy option, Canadian designer Alfred Sung's offering features the right amount of frill, subtle ruching and a flowing skirt. Try Bespoke Brides in Chester.

Black Wedding Dress

Each year brings a new alternative colour to the traditional white and 2016 sees black step into the spotlight. A vast departure from last year's pink, the black wedding dress is certainly not for everyone. Guaranteed to make a statement, it's undoubtedly a chic option and, rather than looking like something from the Addams family, a black dress would work well with a lavish, monochrome-themed wedding complete with long banquet tables and regal-looking chandeliers. Try Vera Wang's new Autumn 2016 collection.

Mercedes by Vera Wang - a bold, chic statement dress

Tip: although stepping away from the traditional may seem tempting for some brides willing to break the mould, it's important to consider the longevity of your wedding photos. What seems appealing now may not in twenty years and the last thing any bride wants is to regret their bold choice when showing their future grandchildren the wedding album.

Will you be embracing any of these trends in your choice of dress? Which is your favourite?
