Review: Heald Country House Retreats

Review: Heald Country House Retreats

When you first arrive at Heald Country House, from the outside the two boutique barns give very little away...

Step inside and one glance up at the mezzanine kingsize bedrooms looking down onto large lounges with log burners, Farrow and Ball décor and giant feather sofas, and it's clear you've arrived in your very own little piece of romantic, chill out heaven.

Located in the middle of green rolling Cheshire countryside they really are a haven of peace and tranquillity.

The stunning back drop of Heald Country House

The barns have an intriguing history too. Bought in 2005 by owners Rachael and Louis Hill, the barns and the house were totally derelict, but with a lot of hard work, dedication and a special flare for creating something just that bit different, Rachael has transformed them into something really quite special. But she's not stopping there, as later this month she will launch a third smaller "barnlette" that sleeps 2, but still complete with all the luxuries you would expect!

And indeed, Rachael's efforts to create a cross between a 5* hotel suite and a private hideout haven have not gone unnoticed as Wolsey Lodges have selected Heald Country House Retreats as their only Cheshire recommended retreat, and more recently voted 'One of the best places to stay in Cheshire' by Visit England.

Perhaps it's not surprising then that since opening their doors over two years ago, they have been host to super star celebrities looking for a first class, private and secluded get away, as well as brides, couples, and celebrating families.

Relax in The Garden Room

We stayed in The Garden Room which sleeps 2. The other barn on offer is aptly named The Old Parlour which sleeps 4 and is designed as self-catering accommodation with a fully equipped kitchen and all mod cons.

The Old Parlour

We knew we were arriving late so Rachael had kindly lit the fire and candles, turned on the lights and helped us with our bags into the barn. As it was a really special weekend for us, we had pre-ordered a bottle of chilled champagne and Rachael said she could also offer us a 3 course dinner in the barn, but we decided to go out and try one of the local foodie places!

Comfort, class and a contemporary twist

Rachael has an eye for detail and the barns are beautifully decorated and restored to perfection, with many original features and a rustic but contemporary style. Nothing is overlooked; The White Company bed linen bedding and toiletries, soft fluffy bathrobes and towels, and enough entertainment to keep you occupied for weeks!

Each barn has a wonderful selection of games, coffee table books, DVD's and flat screen 3D TV with surround sound, perfect if you just want to curl up in front of the fire with your favourite movie.

The Garden Room also has a giant, over-sized roll top copper bath which - positioned directly under the skylight allows you to lay back, glass of fizz in hand and enjoy a view of the stars above you!

Rachael assured me the copper keeps the water hot for hours which is no bad thing, as once I was in I didn't want to come out!

Luxuriate in the deep copper bath with a glass of fizz

After a short stroll to the delightful Cholmondeley Arms for dinner (there is also the Dusty Miller in Wrenbury) we settled down by the firepit in our own private garden wrapped up in blankets and toasting marshmallows.

"We have hardly any light pollution here," explained Rachael, "On a clear night you really are treated to the most wonderful view of the night sky. Sitting out under the stars is something I just love to do, so I thought our guests would too! One of our guests actually proposed here and she said yes!"

Toast marshmallows while you star gaze

Having had the most comfortable nights sleep in the vast kingsize bed, we were awoken by birdsong and streaming sunlight in through the skylights above us - a quiet change to the usual morning routine.

Breakfast came as a delicious light continental hamper with locally sourced croissants, bread, jams, meats and eggs which meant we could eat it whenever we wanted to and not be interrupted. Even though the Garden Room does not have a kitchen as such, it does have a small fridge, microwave oven, kettle and toaster so we were able to make our own tea and coffee and warm the croissants.

Locally sourced, fresh products for breakfast

Rachael can also offer afternoon teas, dinners, baby-sitting, beauty therapists from Cheshire's Spa of the Year, and even a private driver.

So what inspired Rachael to create these idyllic, little love nests? "I just thought 'what would I want if I were to go away on a romantic short break' and have tried to create that for our guests. Luxury, comfort, beautiful decor and privacy."

And that is exactly what Heald Country House Retreats delivers - and more!
